Why You Should Stop Worrying About Big Data And Love Your Consumer

In the post-advertising world, many brands struggle to understand the people they’re selling to and why they behave as they do. As power shifts from brands to consumers, knowing your consumer has never been more important. Even the accounting firm PwC has woken up to the fact that every industry participant will need to invest in customer understanding and engagement. But so long as this point is couched solely in data-analytics terms, it tells only part of the story.

Facebook’s Stories project has, for all intents and purposes, fulfilled its end goal. Now a fully-fledged, first-of-its-kind ad network named Sponsored Stories, not unrelated to Twitter’s Promoted Tweets Trends Accounts, it allows brands to affix their name (and corresponding Facebook page) to an organic, consumer-generated activity in the hopes of populating the well-intentioned promoter’s friend network with a more compelling push to purchase.

An inspiring thing has happened to our social media feeds in the last week. The tightrope of life and death that we all walk on was exposed for one young entrepreneur. Refusing to take his situation lying down, he’s using viral marketing to raise awareness for his ailment and motivate people across the globe to help save his life. Amit Gupta was a regular ol’ human being like the rest of us.

Not only did blogs help businesses rank better for SEO, they also permitted customers and brands to have meaningful dialogue.

Everybody is throwing around the word content these days, but I get the feeling there is no general agreement about what it means.

BREAKING NEWS Storytelling is the most engaging way for a brand to interact with consumers. OK, that’s hardly a new point of view, although you’d be excused for thinking so as it’s recently gained new cache through the wise words of Tom Peters, IBM’s Jon Iwata, Tom Foremski, Levi’s jeans, and many others. The Storytelling Matrix, however, takes the science of storytelling to new levels of sophistication and complexity.

As we have evolved as a society, so too has our technology. In this past decade you could have found a digital camera that accepted 3.5 floppy disks (can you believe they’re still for sale ). Rewind another decade and you probably could have hunted down a Polaroid camera with relative ease for your immediate photographic desires. However, now the best cameras in our households are often the ones in our cell phones.

Growing up, all I wanted was a black Pontiac TransAm that spoke to me and helped me fight crime through a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of criminals operating above the law. What I got was a 1985 Peugeot 505s with cigarette burns on the canvas seats and a tape player that didn’t have a reverse button. Cars have come a long way since the forward-thinking days of Knight Rider .

Staying True To The Story: Where The Lorax Went Wrong

Fri, 02 Sep 2022 |

Why haven’t I gone to see the movie adaptation of my favorite childhood story, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax It wasn’t the trailers or previews, but rather the antics of Universal Pictures’ marketing department and their eagerness to slap a Lorax Approved logo on any product within earshot and produce beaming endorsements for any brand however ill-suited they might be willing to pony up. When compared to the lessons from the original story, the irony kills. The blasphemy is palpable.
